Meandering through the mountains (again)

As part of one of our annual "good ol' boy" road trips while my friends and co-conspirators were fishing in the Little Red River below Greer's Ferry Dam at Heber Springs AR, I was beating around the boondocks in mountainous Stone County, Arkansas. Here's what I found:

This is a northeast finger of Greer's Ferry Lake where Arkansas Highway 263 crosses the lake via a bridge hundreds of feet tall. Most of the bluff you see here is normally below water.

This is normally lake bottom opposite the cliffs you saw in the preceding picture. The ruts are not mine. They belong to the unfortunate soul who preceded me at this site. One of the tricks while negotiating mother earth in a four wheel drive vehicle is knowing when to stop, despite the temptation to proceed.

A more than ankle deep foot print near the ruts you saw in the last picture.

An old barn on Arkansas Highway 263 near Woodrow AR. The election is long over and the signs remain.

A low water bridge spanning Turkey Creek on Hanover Road in Stone County, Arkansas. The creek was flowing over the bridge when I shot it in March 2010. See that picture here.
  • JOE2934-6
Just above the low water bridge, the bare trees of winter reflect in Turkey Creek.

This picture is especially placed for my Ohio friend Frank Girolami, spirtual leader and guru of "A Frank Angle," his fine blog. A while back, Frank asked me to post a picture from 56 Arkansas. Well Frank, here 'tis.

A tree reflects in a creek crossing Mitchell Road in Stone County, Arkansas. The picture was shot from a low-water bridge. The best I can tell, the creek is "Roasting Ear Creek," properly pronounced, "rohs'near." For non-southeners, a roas'near is an ear of corn ready to be cooked.
  • JOE3454-3
A much wider shot showing the previous tree in its neighborhood.
  • JOE3512
This is the south end of the low water bridge from which I shot the tree reflections in Roasting Ear Creek (roas'near).

This old store is on Arkansas Highway 25, east of Heber Springs AR at Almond.
