The Crain Loop calamities

Crain Loop in Cleveland County Arkansas is the idyllic country road. You wind through serene woods and pastures. The road seques from gravel to dirt, from wide to narrow with few bumps and lumps. There are six residences on the road, two are occupied, the others are calamities. Time and neglect are the culprits. Read the stories about these old homes here and here.

Within sight of Arkansas Highway 35 on Crain Loop Road, this old home is teetering on collapse. It was well built, but left alone, well-built inevitably looses to Mother Nature's onslaught.

The north end of the house catches the brunt of what the elements serve up. The main structure will soon follow the collapsed back porch.

The front of the house features a porch. One of the old screen doors was leaning against the side of the structure.

Not far from the front porch is either what's left of the well for the home or a fine sink hole. It is approximately five feet across and six feet or better deep. Better to see it in daylight that rudely discover it after dark.

This is the back side of the next calamity. You can see the road throught the doors. From the preponderence of spent bottles in the backyard trash heap, I'm betting the the last use of the structure was a deer camp.

Just down the road is the archtypical "tar-paper" covered home. There is a ladder leaning agains the tree to the left of the image. It leads to a platform wedged in the lower brances. Probably a former deer stand.

Near the south end of Crain Loop is this old home place. One of the out-buildings has collapsed. The house has a while to go, but is headed in that direction.
